There is something profoundly humbling about growing a human. From that initial positive pregnancy test to hearing that first heartbeat—or experiencing a flutter you weren’t so sure was a flutter—it’s all part of a quiet, awe-inspiring transformation within your body.
And although you can’t see every step develop, your baby transforms daily. Week by week, your little one is developing bone, relaxing muscles, trying hiccups, and developing a personality. Yes—even before birth.
This is the baby development process, baby development week by week—how a small cluster of cells becomes the little individual you’ll soon meet.
Month 1: The Foundation Begins
Most women don’t even realize they are pregnant, but by the end of the first month, enormous things are already occurring.
The fertilized egg burrows into the uterine wall, and cells split quickly into layers that eventually form everything from the heart to the spine to the brain. A primitive heart tube starts beating—palpably small, but pulsating with life.
This is the beginning of it all.
Month 2: The Heartbeat You’ll Never Forget
At six weeks, many expectant parents experience one of the most emotional milestones: hearing the heartbeat for the first time.
Arms and legs begin to bud. The brain grows fast. Facial features like eyelids, ears, and a hint of a nose start forming. Inside, major organs begin to develop—kidneys, liver, lungs—each one gearing up for their job in the real world.
Your baby is roughly the size of a raspberry now. But in weeks, they’ve changed from invisible to unmistakably there.
Month 3: Tiny Movements Start
At the end of the first trimester, your baby is stretching and squirming, though you won’t yet feel it.
Fingernails develop. Teeth are growing beneath the gums. Even small fingerprints begin to form. Your baby’s body begins to get longer, and the head that was nearly half the size of their entire shape starts to round out into proportion.
It’s crazy to consider that by the end of this month, your baby will have all their muscles, organs, and bones, just not yet formed.
Month 4: The Second Trimester Glow—and the Wiggles Start
This is when pregnancy really becomes “real.” Your energy comes back, and if you’re fortunate, a small bump appears. At about 16 to 20 weeks, you can feel that first flutter, like butterfly wings or popcorn exploding within your belly.
It’s your baby waving hello.
They can now yawn, suck their thumb, and maybe even react to outside sounds in the womb. Eyebrows form, hair growth starts, and the heart pumps about 25 quarts of blood daily.
It’s not biology—it’s bonding.
Month 5: Halfway There and Full of Personality
At 20 weeks, you’re halfway through your pregnancy—this is usually the time anatomy gender ultrasound baby development takes place. You may learn the intercourse, glimpse your baby’s face in exquisite detail, or simply see them kick, stretch, or roll on the monitor.
Babies at this age can hear their voice and identify familiar noises. Some mothers tell us their baby gets more energetic during music or after feeding. They’re starting to form habits of movement and rest, slight hints of personality.
Hair grows, eyelashes appear, and the skin is covered in a protective layer called vernix.
Month 6: Eyes Opening and Dreams Beginning
At six months, your baby’s lungs begin to practice breathing—albeit they won’t be used until birth. They also begin to blink, and for the first time, their eyes may open.
Their sleep patterns become more established, and scientists think they may even start dreaming at this point.
Their kicks could become more powerful, and if you place a hand on your stomach, you can sense your baby responding to touch. These small encounters feel so real and so emotional.
Month 7: Room’s Getting Tight
Your baby is gaining fat and muscle and beginning to resemble a newborn. They are elongating, taking up space, and becoming more sensitive to the world outside.
You might even catch them getting hiccups regularly. (Yes, that thump-thump noise is probably a hiccuping session.)
Their brain is growing at lightning speed, and they’re learning to control body temperature, deposit minerals, and blink with more purpose. By this time, your baby might be approximately 3 pounds and 15–16 inches in length.
Month 8: Finishing Touches
This is when your baby begins getting ready for the world outside. Their lungs are developing, their bones are becoming harder (except the skull, which remains soft for birth), and they’re gaining cute baby fat.
They’re probably also encountering head-down now, getting into position.
Space is small, so the movements will feel changed—more rolls or pokes than precision kicks—but that doesn’t necessarily mean baby is running in slow motion. They’re just acclimating to the cozy little house they’ve had this whole time.
Month 9: The Grand Finale
Your baby is almost full term. They have developed their organs, their brain is still fine-tuning, and they could already have a sleep-wake cycle that continues after birth. You might even notice some movements or rhythms they follow each day.
There will be days that will seem like an eternity. There will be days you’ll attempt to slow down.
But you’re nearly there. The baby you’ve grown within you will soon be in your arms, and the journey you both have undertaken—silent, sacred, shared—will transform your life forever.
